The Age of Immigration
The period 1820-1920 is called the most significant in U.S. immigration because thirty-two million immigrants came to the United States from all over Europe during that period. Immigrants had number of different reasons for wanting to leave home. Some wanted to avoid political oppression in their homelands. Some other went there to seek jobs on the open market. Others wanted to escape threats to their physical survival. Difficult economic conditions in their native country were the main reason why European decided to move to the United States. Most of them were unemployed by the introduction of machine in industry and agriculture. Immigrants had different cultures, languages, and educational backgrounds. In spite of their differences, the great majority of them were young and ready to make sacrifices for a better future.
The lives of many immigrants were very difficult together. Within three generation, immigrants families spoke English as there first language, a development that was necessary for their economic progress and full membership in American society. The second and third generation of immigrants, families thought of themselves as Americans.
