Book Review: Too Good To Be True By Prajakta Koli
Introduction
'Too Good To Be True' is a debut novel by Prajakta Koli, a YouTuber and an actor. This novel depicts the love of a middle-class girl (Avani) who works in a bookstore and a billionaire (Aman), the CEO of 'Rainas Textile'. It portrays the thoughts that revolve in the person's mind who has encountered a billionaire who is presumed to be arrogant but turns out to be understanding, grounded, and a 'green flag' which is in fact 'too good to be true' for a character like Avani.
Summary of the content
The romantic story is set in Mumbai, India incorporating the engaging love-play between two contrasting characters; Aman and Avani. Avani is a 23-year-old law student who also works in a bookstore owned by her friend's parents. She lives in an apartment in Mumbai by herself as her parents are divorced and her grandmother lives in Pune. When asked with whom she wanted to live, she did not choose either of her parents, hence she was raised by Aaji (grandmother). Later, in the course of study, she moves to Mumbai and manages to live by herself surrounded by her hand-picked three friends; Rhea, Maya, and Martin. Working in a bookstore was not just for the sake of money but rather for her passion for novels; particularly romance-based. Following the divorce of her parents, she did not have much faith in love. But then, a visit of a person to a bookstore followed by their multiple encounters makes Avani question if this person is real.
Aman, a 31-year-old is The CEO of 'Rainas Textile' who owns a contrasting personality to what rich people are thought to have. He is raised by romantic parents hence transcending the warmth and calmness into his own personality. Opposite the Aman is his brother Gagan, who is more practical and reserved. The urge to implicate practicality in everything was not much of concern to Aman until it came to Avani which hampered the relationship between Aman and Gagan, Gagan and Avani, and Aman and Avani themselves.

The story has integrated several nuances of friendship, love, hustle, romance, and heartbreaks wrapped in the Gen Z language.

Martin: A fun character with a good sense of humor.
Gagan: A character resonating with practicality.
Aaji: Represents the loving and caring nature.
Ayesha Raina: A chill mother who is well-informed about her children's in and out and down to earth despite the height of success she has reached.
Anil Raina: Welcoming and down-to-earth person same as his wife.
Critical Analysis
Strengths:
- The title of the book truly justifies the character 'too good to be true'.
- The story has instant touches of humor making the read enjoyable.
- The entry of Aman was described with minute details enabling the readers to have an image of him.
- A story has the flow and feel of a Bollywood movie.
Weaknesses:
- Knowing the writer for years through her videos, it feels like the main character is the author herself as similar characteristics are refraining the readers from imagining the character by themselves.
- There is no suspense in the story making it bland.
- The story resembles the same rich guy and middle-class girl love story making it an ordinary story.
- The character development is poor.
- The novel lacked a minute description of the love scene.
Personal Reflection
I came to realize that there is no such thing as people hate or love, it is just the circumstantial things that make something hateful or loving. For instance, the traffic generally hated was wished to have lasted longer when Aman wanted to see Avani.
Conclusion
The novel is a basic romance story of a rich and middle-class girl with the touch of Gen Z friendships. With a subtle play of humor, it has enriched the storytelling. However, with the poor character development, shallow love scenes, and insubstantial plot the story is repressed to have made a long-lasting impact.
