Book Review: The Fine Print

 Book Review: The Fine Print

Introduction

The Fine Print is a novel by romance author Lauren Asher that revolves the story in the Dreamland exploring the dynamics of a boss and the employee. It flows the captivating chemistry of the cold-hearted boss and upfront employee. The story hooks you throughout to discover how the arrogant boss molds himself into the world of love.

Summary of the content

The story is set in Dreamland, centralizing two main characters: Rowan and Zahra. It starts with the death of the director, Mr. Brady Kane, who delegates his position to his younger grandson, Rowan Kane, in his Will. A grandson with no interest in Dreamland becomes the director just for the sake of Will and his brothers for six months only. The aim of reframing the park requires the creator team to envision new ideas, which brings the two main characters into play.

Rowan very reserved and arrogant boss who does not give much importance to others' opinions cannot do the same in the case of Zahra as she is not afraid of even her boss to speak what feels right. This nature of Zahra makes Rowan attracted to her making him do crazy things in love such as taking holidays from work to spend time with Zahra who used to see nothing more than work in life.

While he does not value his employees and their concerns regarding health insurance and salary increments, the same concern becomes significant when put forward by Zahra. Rowan only realizes the insufficient health insurance when he encounters the nurse in the hospital when Zahra is taken to the hospital. He then gets to know the true reality of Martha who had been working elsewhere for her husband's treatment. This portrays the pitiful situation where bosses are ignorant about employees' requirements. It gives a message that people only really know things when it happens to them.

The novel also touches upon sensitive areas such as the impact on the mental health of the children because of the alcoholic father, and concern for persons with disabilities giving a space to leave a message to mass that they are also important aspects to have thought of while running the business.

Characters

Rowan: A cold, strict man who doesn't bother what others might feel because of his behavior. However, with time the facets of the personality unfold with the person he loves.

Zahra: A sweet and cheerful girl who is very creative and also blunt when she has to speak up for what she feels is right. Her character is empathetic which helps the audience be emotionally involved with her.

Brady Kane: A sweet person who has struggled his life to build Dreamland.

Seth Kane: A person so indulged in love who ruins his children's mental health after the death of his love of life. He is portrayed as an arrogant, cold-hearted person who even does not care about his children.

Martha: A secretary to the directors of Dreamland who is very sweet and has good memory and administrative skills.

Claire: Supportive friend who encourages Zahra to showcase the optimum talent.

Ani: A differently able sweet sister of Zahra.

Jenny: Head of the Beta team (one of the creator teams) who is caring, encouraging, and understanding.

Critical Analysis

Strengths:

  • The story is presented by both characters engaging the audience to both sides of the feelings.
  • The chapters are short maintaining excitement to jump to another.
  • It has beautifully conveyed the message that men act differently with the person they love.
  • The twist is nowhere to be tracked unless the story unfolds.

Weaknesses

  • Brady Kane's side of the narration of Rowan to Zahra was not described properly as she mentions that you are not what your grandfather used to tell you are like to Rowan.

Personal Reflection

Being a law student I got an opportunity to learn the business dynamics through this novel.

Conclusion

The novel has incorporated all the dynamics of romantic love filled with happiness, highs, and lows. While being central to romance and love, it has also succeeded in conveying significant messages about the impact of alcohol, and concern for differently able people. On top of that, it keeps you awed by the things men do when in love.
