Book Review: The American Roommate Experiment – A Refreshing Take on Romance

Book Review: The American Roommate Experiment – A Refreshing Take on Romance

Introduction

A romance-based novel, The American Roommate Experiment is written by Elena Armas, the New York Times bestselling author of The Spanish Love Deception. It explores the modern love of two people sharing a room in New York City.

Summary of the Content

The story set around New York City is uniquely outlined from the perspectives of both lead characters, allowing the audience to connect with each of them. By alternating between their thoughts, the writer eliminates the common issue in single-perspective narratives, where readers are left wondering about the other character’s feelings during pivotal moments. This dual perspective provides clarity and enriches the connection with the story.

Critical Analysis

Strengths:

  • The pace of the story is natural and real making the audience feel relatable.
  • The dual narration offers a comprehensive understanding of the lead characters, ensuring the audience remains connected to both.

Weaknesses:

  • The storyline of Olly could have been presented more persuasively as there was shown anticipation of something big going on with Olly's life, but the eventual reveal could not proportionate the level of anticipation built.
  • Abuela’s identity inconsistencies were confusing. At times, she was referred to as Lucas's mother and at other times as his grandmother.
  • Lucas’s entry into the story was predictable due to prior hints, which reduced the impact of his arrival. The background was strong enough to create anticipation without pre-informing the audience.
  • There was an initial implication that Lucas had a crush on her beforehand, but the development of the storyline contradicted this, leading to disappointment.
  • It lacked the enthralling twist which could have been the cherry on top.

Personal Reflection

You have to follow your passion and be devoted to it rather than being trapped in a profession you do not really enjoy.

Conclusion

The story is a comforting take on the romance genre with a soothing pace of character development and relatable happenings without much exaggeration. However, the poor character development of supporting characters restrained it from achieving its full potential. It is best recommended for readers who prefer grounded and realistic romance stories.
