CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE: A GOOD NEWS – BAD NEWS STORY There are some good news and some bad news about cardiovascular disease. Deaths from cardiovascular disease have decrease greatly since 1960s in the western countries. Educated peoples healthier lifestyle is one of the factors. Next factor is the improved diagnosis and treatment of the diseases. This is the good piece of news. Nevertheless, cardiovascular disease is still major killer in the west. Secondly, the problem of the developed countries is also becoming the problem of the developing countries because of physical in activity, smoking and less healthy diet. This is the bad piece of the news. Since expensive advanced technology cannot benefit the poor people of the developing countries, peoples education about harmful smoking, less healthy diet is necessary for their healthy condition.

HEART DISEASE AND CHANGING ATTITUDES Now it has been found that heart disease is linked with stress, smoking, poor nutrition and lack of exercise. Therefore, people have realized that they can reduce the risk of heart disease by changing lifestyle. Like people in the past they do not depend on doctors and medicine only. They know that they themselves should be responsible for improving their health. So they smoke less or stop smoking. They try to reduce stress. They eat food with less fat or cholesterol. They do regular exercise. Now death rate from heart disease has fallen. Better diagnosis and treatment may be one cause for this decrease. But people Ú s awareness of the benefits of prevention is the main cause.
